Martial Arts

Focuses on Students' Individual Needs

A competent instructor understands that students are individuals. Some have a great deal of strength, others more flexibility. Some have quick reaction times, others are slow to react. The instructor recognizes each student's strong and weak points, and trains accordingly.

Some students take a martial art to spar and compete; others to focus on traditional forms. Instructors can and should be able to contour a class to provide training that satisfies both types of students. During sparring exercises, the instructor might push competition-oriented students harder, pairing them up with the best fighters. During forms training, the instructor might push traditional-oriented students harder-stressing deeper stances and fine-tuning liming.

Surely, creating the feeling that one-on-one training is taking place within a class environment is difficult. But a good instructor can do it. He'll mix general instructions with specific comments and criticisms directed at individual students. When this is done effectively, students will finish class feeling as though they are better at their art than before class began.
