Maintains Control Of The Class

Maintaining control of a class doesn't mean ruling with an iron fist. However, it does mean that the instructor's comments and commands are reacted to immediately. If students are sparring and the instructor calls the class's attention to a pair of students who are sparring together particularly well, all students should immediately stop what they're doing and direct their attention to the instructor.
Control is also maintained by keeping the full attention of the class. To that end, the instructor never stays in one place too long. He constantly moves about, demonstrating a technique from different angles so all students see it. To keep students on their toes, he may randomly select one to help him demonstrate a technique.

By maintaining control, the instructor also limits the amount and types of injuries. For example, when instructing pairs of students to implement a throw, an astute instructor foresees what could go wrong, and plans for it. He'll make sure mats are plentiful and positioned correctly. New students won't be paired with other beginners, and the technique will be demonstrated enough times so everyone understands its basic premise.

Finally, the instructor should be able to handle a crisis situation calmly and professionally. If a student gets injured or starts to feel sick, the instructor should see to the injured student's needs while keeping the rest of the class calm.
